Big or Small, SERVPRO of Beachwood Handles it All

5/11/2018 (Permalink)

What do you do if you have a large commercial water loss? How can anyone possibly clean up all that water? SERVPRO of Beachwood/Shaker Heights/Cleveland Heights has the equipment and the expertise to get the job done right!

No Job Is Too Large

Our SERVPRO team can get on the scene with a trailer mounted dehumidifier, called a desiccant, in tow. It is fully equipped with a generator, so it can perform dehumidification even at sites where power is not available.

Pictured is a recent commercial water loss job for which we brought in the desiccant trailer. When the owners were surprised to walk in one day and find water had been flowing through their building for days due to a failed hot water tank, they knew to call in the experts. Even though it was cold outside and there was no heat on in the building, we were able to get the job done with the trailer desiccant that provides its own power and dehumidifies even when heat is not present. The owners and property managers were thrilled with how quickly and effectively our team extracted the water and dried the nearly 100,000 square feet of mixed commercial, industrial, and office space that had been affected by all the water.

When our SERVPRO disaster team arrives on the scene at a small residential job or a large commercial job, they know how to handle it with expertise no matter the size or scope of the situation.

We take pride in providing our employees with the best tools, equipment, and vehicles to effectively and efficiently get the problem solved with minimal stress and impact on our customers. We know it is never anticipated when a water emergency occurs, but when you call in our SERVPRO of Beachwood/Shaker Heights/Cleveland Heights, you can count on us to get things clean and dry even when it seems impossible!

If your business suffers a major loss, call SERVPRO of Beachwood/Shaker Heights/Cleveland Heights at 216-464-4498!

Preventing Commercial Losses

Most people think water damage only occurs from flooding after days of heavy rain. Damage can occur even on a sunny day, leaving your property soaked. Whether the culprit is a broken plumbing pipe, leaking roof, or backup of the sewer system, the damage can be devastating and costly.”

“Roofing – Deteriorated, missing or damaged roofing materials and ice dams can all allow water to enter through the roof and cause damage to the interior of the building and the contents. Inadequate attic insulation and ventilation can speed up the roof’s deterioration and cause ice dams to form in the winter. Exposure to wind, snow, ice, rain and foot traffic can also affect a roof’s ability to keep water out. Businesses often have flat roofs and mechanicals such as heating and air conditioning systems located on the roof, which also present unique challenges.”

Why call us for your business damage?

8/20/2017 (Permalink)

Here at SERVPRO of Beachwood, Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights we can help if your business or commercial property floods. You may be wondering why you would need us. Sometimes the damage of water is not as simple and just cleaning up the water. Call us 24/7/365 216-464-4498

"Though the water seepage will stop once the source of water has been identified and plugged, the problem does not end there. It is essential to determine the appropriate water extraction method, which may range from the use of a wet-dry vac unit to more heavy duty equipment like submersible pumps. Once this has been completed, the process of drying and dehumidification should start. Oftentimes, affected surfaces and areas look dry once the water has been extracted and removed, but there remains hidden water and moisture.  This would call for the use of drying and dehumidifying equipment. As such, carpets, walls, and flooring require removal, drying, cleaning, and disinfecting."

Commercial Carpet

The following was copied directly from: http://www.IICRC.org/consumers/care/commercial-carpet-cleaning/

“Commercial carpet receives many times the traffic of typical residential carpet. That's why it's important to select (fiber, construction, pile design, color) and install commercial carpet that fits a building user's needs. However, once that carpet is properly selected and installed, its durability and lasting beauty is highly dependent on the ongoing maintenance and cleaning programs.

The first critical component in programmed maintenance and cleaning is routine vacuuming coupled with rapid response to spots and spills. Carpet serves as a "sink" or collection point for everything that is tracked in or settles out of the air. Qualities such as sound absorption, slip resistance and soil-trapping ability makes it the most desirable floor covering in many buildings. Ultimately, however, even the best maintained carpet must be thoroughly cleaned to empty the "sink."

This is where IICRC-certifed technicians come in. They have the equipment, training and experience not only to empty the "sink," but also to restore the color and beauty of commercial carpet, while improving overall indoor environmental quality in the building.”

Keeping Your Commercial Kitchen Clean

6/20/2017 (Permalink)

“If you wish to maintain your restaurant kitchen in good condition, you need to ensure routine cleaning. You can either do it yourself or get it done by any commercial kitchen cleaning services. According to experts, the major reason why kitchens get messy is because of the lack of regular cleaning. When you run a commercial kitchen, hygiene and order are essential factors to ensure. You can even be sued unless you maintain your commercial kitchen in good condition.

By keeping the kitchen tidy and ordered, you can impress your customers or visitors. A properly maintained kitchen will surely appeal to your customers. They would mention about it in their communication, which in turn can enhance your reputation.”

  • Injuries, when employees trip, fall, strike or are struck by out-of-place objects;
  • Injuries from using improper tools because the correct tool can't be found;
  • Lowered production because of the time spent maneuvering over and around someone else's mess, and time spent looking for proper tools and materials;
  • Time spent investigating and reporting accidents that could have been avoided;
  • Fires due to improper storage and disposal of flammable or combustible materials and wastes;
  • Substandard quality of finished products because of production schedule delays, damaged or defective finishes, ill-equipped employees, etc.;
  • Lack of future work due to a reputation for poor quality;

What is an ERP?

8/23/2016 (Permalink)

It is estimated that up to 50% of businesses that close due to a disaster, such as fire and flood never reopen!  Of the businesses that survive, the overwhelming majority of them had a preparedness plan in place.

Are you “Ready for whatever happens?”

    June is National Safety Month- Creating a Safety Management Program

    6/10/2016 (Permalink)

    There are many things that can be done to create a safe workplace program. Travelers Insurance online wrote an article with lots of great tips.

    The following portion was copied directly from: https://www.travelers.com/resources/workplace-safety/how-to-create-a-safety-management-program.aspx

    1. Demonstrate management involvement – Management must lead by example. A visible demonstration that you embrace a safety culture is imperative to its success. Provide the essential time, budget and resources to create and support a safety program.
    2. Communicate your safety plan clearly – Your safety plan must be published and available to all employees. Reminders and updates should be timely and effective. Allow employees to contribute their suggestions to making the workplace safer.
    3. Get everyone involved – A safety program is likely to be more effective when employees at all levels are involved. Standardized policies should outline responsibilities and accountability for all employees. Safety goals can become part of job descriptions and employee reviews. Safety committees can help ensure that safety practices are understood and reinforced throughout the company. Positive reinforcement of safe behaviors can be an effective way to help build the desired culture.
    4. Train your employees to work safely – Safety training should begin from the moment an employee is hired. Ongoing training is also essential to creating a safety culture.
    5. Review, revise, improve – A safety program should be dynamic, especially since most business environments continue to evolve. An effective safety program should be flexible enough to adjust to changes. Regularly review, evaluate and identify risks that could affect safety, and make the changes necessary to keep your workplace safe."

    June is National Safety Month- Safety in the Workplace

    6/9/2016 (Permalink)

    There are many things that can be done to create a safe workplace culture. Travelers Insurance online wrote an article with lots of information.

    The following was copied directly from: https://www.travelers.com/resources/workplace-safety/creating-a-safety-culture-in-the-workplace.aspx

    "The following four steps can serve as a starting point in driving safety across your business.

    1. Evaluate risks. To understand how to create a safer workplace, you must first understand the risks you face every day. Each task and associated risk should be properly evaluated, and safety-based changes should be considered.

  • Analyze past incidents and near misses.Understand that past incidents can help you identify root causes and identify risks and exposures that threaten the safety of your employees and the success of your business.
  • Identify the risks before they result in loss. Review your work policies and procedures, buildings and equipment, employee work practices and behaviors and geographic location to determine if there are opportunities to prevent or mitigate loss. And hold people accountable to the practices.
  • 2. Design a plan to keep safe. A good plan is the best place to start, but it is only the beginning. Once you have a plan, you must act to eliminate or minimize risk.

  • Get commitment. Your management team should be committed to a safety culture from the beginning.
  • Stay focused. Keep focused on the risks and exposures identified during your evaluation.
  • Prioritize your efforts. Focus on the risks that pose the greatest threat. You should consider frequency and severity of the loss potential, and/or the opportunity to prevent or mitigate risks.
  • Identify solutions and resources.Your solutions can vary from implementing engineering controls to creating administrative policies and procedures. These can help create positive changes in safety attitude, commitment and culture.
  • 3. Implement your plan. Implementation entails communication of the plan and its details, training, regularly scheduled practice and drills, and ongoing review. A thorough plan will cover a number of potential risk areas, including buildings and equipment, the environment, employees, customers and vendors.

  • Communicate and train - the real test of a safety program and culture is not what is written down on paper, but rather how well it actually works. How well your plan works is often dependent on what your employees know and what they do at the time of an incident.
  • 4. Monitor, evaluate and improve your plan. As your business environment changes, so should your safety program. Regularly test your plan to determine if it fits the changing business environment and reflects changing accountabilities.

  • Monitor the plan and collect feedback to determine the effectiveness of the plan.
  • Regularly compare your safety performance against the plan’s expectations.
  • Make adjustments when necessary.
  • Recognize success. Be sure to communicate and celebrate your safety successes.”

    The following was copied directly from: https://www.travelers.com/resources/workplace-safety/preventing-slips-trips-and-falls-in-the-workplace.aspx

    "Some hazards associated with slip, trip and fall injuries include:

  • Slippery surfaces, such as a gloss-finished tile, polished stone, etc.
  • Holes or broken surfaces.
  • Uneven walking surfaces.
  • Poorly marked and/or poorly lit walkway transitions.
  • Wet surfaces caused by spills or poor drainage.
  • Slippery conditions due to mud, ice or water during inclement weather.
  • Creating a Safe Passage

    Routine inspection and maintenance should be a regular part of your safety program to help prevent falls for both your visitors and employees.

  • Design your entrances and walkways to accommodate the expected volume of foot traffic through your business.
  • Conduct periodic walkthrough surveys of your premises to help ensure your property is kept in safe condition.
  • Ensure all walkways are properly lit.
  • Maintain all flooring surfaces at all times.
  • Use slip-resistant floor treatments, especially in areas proven to be wet.
  • Apply floor treatments to manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Use “wet floor” signs to warn of known hazards.
  • Schedule maintenance of floor surfaces during times of low traffic.
  • Have spill cleanup supplies readily available.
  • Ensure that entry areas are properly maintained and any mats are secured.
  • Promptly investigate incidents and document findings if an accident and/or injury occurs.”

    Commercial Carpet Tips from IICRC

    “What steps should I take to maintain carpet in a high-traffic area on a daily basis, and to deal with spills and stains?

    ·         It's a good idea to keep sand, grit and grass clippings off walkways outside entries to prevent inward tracking of these abrasive soils.

    ·         Purchase a properly sized entry mat, the bigger the better.  There must be room for at least two steps to sufficiently wipe soil from feet before encountering the installed carpet. A carpet with a nylon face and vinyl back is best for moisture and oils absorption, combined with the resiliency necessary to collect a quantity of particle soil. The IICRC suggests a rental mat, since that guarantees frequent maintenance. Place entry mats on hard surfaces rather than on carpet where they can trap moisture or cause plasticizer migration.

    ·         Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum daily, especially after major events. The sooner you collect soils from the surface, the easier it is to remove them. For most carpet, you should use an upright vacuum with brush agitation, unless your canister vacuum is particularly well designed. The wider the head, the more efficient.

    ·         Typically, deep cleaning should be accomplished on at least a semi-annual basis, with no more than two entry and high-traffic area "rinse" cleanings between the deep cleaning. This is dependent on traffic and daily maintenance as well. At a minimum, some attention should be given to primary entry areas on a quarterly basis.

    ·         If spots are treated immediately, most will respond with plain warm water and very little mild detergent added.

    ·         Use high-efficiency double-lined poly-fiber collection bags. This reduces periodic maintenance such as dusting of furniture, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) filter exchange.

    ·         Make sure the HVAC system is slightly positively pressurized as well, which means that air is going out when doors are opened, rather than being sucked in. Proper air exchange rates can be calibrated according to ASHRAE regulations for the building with a trained HVAC contractor.

    ·         Ensure proper air filtration through the HVAC System. High-efficiency pleated filters, rather than inexpensive fiberglass filters, are recommended.”

    Commercial Carpet Cleaning
