Why Hire a Green Cleaning Company Based in Cleveland?

6/15/2018 (Permalink)

It may seem like a luxury to hire a house cleaner, but sometimes you need that extra deep clean, especially after a home remodeling project or for a home that has been vacant for a while. When you need all the window framing, baseboards, and even the insides and outsides of cabinets scrubbed, why not consider hiring a green cleaning professional. In addition to getting your home the deep clean you seek, you’re also doing your part to be environmentally responsible and take care of the earth. Read on to find out the benefits of hiring a house cleaner that’s planet-friendly and how it’s actually easy to be green.

  1. Green Cleaning Is Safer for Your Family and Pets

Certainly there are times when one needs to disinfect an area (like on surfaces that have had contact with raw meat or when someone has a contagious illness), but the chemicals in disinfectants can trigger asthma, allergies, and create other health issues. Exposure to living bacteria is actually good for us and according to some research may actually strengthen immune systems. For the most part, when you clean with products that don’t contain toxins, pollutants, or suspected carcinogens such as VOCs, solvents, chlorine, ammonia, sulfates, or irritating dyes and perfumes, you’re making sure your children and pets are living and thriving in a healthy and safe environment.

  1. Green Products Are Better for Your Health

Most common household cleaners contain toxic chemicals that can have an adverse effect on your health, which is why the biggest advantage of giving your home an eco-friendly cleaning is that everything will be cleaned with all-natural products. There are tons of household cleaners that can keep your University Heights home fresh and clean that are non-toxic, biodegradable, and made from renewable resources. It is true, however that sometimes it can take a little more time and elbow grease to get green products to work because they are typically gentler and less abrasive than chemical products. Chemicals may make cleaning easier, but they don’t make it any better.

  1. Green Cleaning Companies Provide the Products

In order to ensure your Pepper Pike home is being cleaned with non-toxic and environmentally friendly products, most green cleaners provide all of the cleaning equipment and products, though they will use your products if you specifically request. SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast is happy to provide a data sheet about the products we use in your Newburgh Heights home.

  1. Green Cleaning Companies Are Committed to Being Green in All Areas

While using green house cleaning products is a huge part of taking care of the earth, SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast knows it goes further than just that and make an effort to save water, reuse bottles, reduce waste, and implement sustainable business practices.

  1. Green Cleaning Is Also Safer for the People Doing the Cleaning

A sustainable cleaning philosophy means that our crew members are not exposed to toxic chemicals that could adversely affect their health. We like to take great care of all our employees, so they can take great care of you!

Call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast today at 216-464-4498 to have us make your home Green Clean.

How to Quickly Remove Pet Stains from Carpet in Your Shaker Heights Home

4/27/2018 (Permalink)

Even the best trained pets can still have accidents! When you think of SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast, you probably know that we are experts when it comes to fire and water damage. But did you know that we can also help with less catastrophic messes, like the kinds your pet leaves behind?

That’s right, we can help with carpet cleaning and deodorization. We’re experts at odor removal and have been trained to identify and eliminate offensive odors that come from inside and outside your University Heights home.

Maybe you have a pet odor cleaning job that doesn’t rise to the level of needing professional help. SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast has you covered in that case, too. Here are a couple of easy, inexpensive solutions for pet stains and odors that only require a few products you probably already have in your Richmond Heights home.

For urine stains that are still wet, blot the excess dampness with paper towels – the sooner after the mess is made, the better. Once you’ve absorbed as much excess as you can, mix a solution of 2 cups vinegar, 2 cups warm water and 4 tablespoons of baking soda. Use a spray bottle to spray directly onto the stain. Let it sit for five or ten minutes and then use more paper towels to dry.

You can use the baking soda and vinegar method with heavier or older stains, too. Instead of lightly spraying, you’ll first want to pour just enough vinegar to soak the stain directly onto the carpet, followed by a small amount of baking soda. Make sure you apply vinegar first, then baking soda. Cover the area with a bowl (to prevent your pet from walking in it or ingesting it), and let it sit and dry completely for a day. Uncover, vacuum, and your pet’s bad stain should just a distant memory. Clink this link for more information and a how-to video.

For cleaning and deodorization jobs that will take more than vinegar and baking soda, call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast at 216-464-4498 to learn how we can help fix all of your pet odor problems.

’Tis The Season… For Projects!

7/10/2017 (Permalink)

It’s that time of year to finally get the household projects done that have been piling up. Many of these projects involve paint, stain, and/or gasoline. Aside from the obvious dangers most don’t consider that rags that contain these chemicals can also catch fire. “The oils commonly used in oil-based paints and stains release heat as they dry. If the heat is not released in the air, it builds up. That is why a pile of oily rags can be dangerous. As the rags dry, the heat is trapped. The heat builds up and finally causes a fire.”

Did you know?

“An Average of 800 home fire per year are started when oily rags catch fire or are ignited”

If your home project involves stains or chemicals that get onto rags here is a few tips to keep you safe:

  • “Never leave cleaning rags in a pile. At the end of the day, take the rags outside to dry.
  • Hang the rags outside or spread them on the ground. Weigh them down. Do this so they do not
blow away. Make sure they are not in a pile. Keep them away from buildings.
  • Put dried rags in a metal container. Make sure the cover is tight Fill the container with a water
and detergent solution. This will break down the oils.”

It’s GRILLING SEASON!!

7/7/2017 (Permalink)

It’s GRILLING SEASON!!

Who’s hungry for some burgers? I know we are here at SERVPRO of Beachwood, Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights!

Before you get your grilling on there’s some important things to keep in mind with grills. Grills pose a unique risk especially when dealing with propane tanks. For instance, “Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose. A propane leak will release bubbles. If your grill has a gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off both the gas tank and the grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department. If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill.”

Also to prevent fires it’s important to “Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.”

Proper Garbage Disposal

7/1/2017 (Permalink)

Not everything is meant be thrown in the trash, here is a guide that will help you better understand the do’s and don’ts of proper garbage disposal. “When used, stored and disposed per label directions, most household products like cleaners, beauty products, medicines, auto fluids, paint and lawn care products pose little hazard to people or to the environment. However, these products may become dangerous and hazardous when used, stored or disposed of carelessly.

When thrown in with the regular trash, household hazardous waste can injure sanitation workers. In addition, the hazardous waste may end up in landfills not intended or permitted for those type of wastes which could in turn impact groundwater. When poured on the ground, household hazardous waste may seep into and contaminate our groundwater or the ocean we swim in.” For more information, please continue reading at: https://dpw.lacounty.gov/epd/hhw/dangers.cfm

Cleaning Your Carpets After Winter

6/12/2017 (Permalink)

Now is the time of year you want to start thinking about the carpet in your home for the warm weather months. “Carpets get a lot of abuse during the winter months. With dirt brought in from snow and outdoor debris now is the time to give them some attention before the spring cleaning bug hits. The first step to good cleaning is frequent and thorough vacuuming. “Frequent” means at least once a week. “Thorough” means going back and forth six to eight times on each section of the carpet.

If the carpet is left untreated, dusty airborne particles can dull the colors. Fortunately, the original color is usually under the soil, but if left untreated for a long time, soil is absorbed into the fibers causing a yellow cast that can be difficult if not impossible to remove.”

Is Your Air Conditioner Ready For Summer?

5/25/2017 (Permalink)

During these hot summer days, escaping into your home to enjoy the A/C can be a real teat. Before you crank the A/C this summer, here are some steps to take first. “Before you start tinkering with the system, it's important to understand the basics of how it works. Central air consists of three main parts: the condenser, the blower unit, and the ductwork.

The condenser is the large outdoor unit that is probably tucked behind your garage. Its role is to manage the temperature of the refrigerant, usually Freon, which travels back and forth from the house. The condenser does this by pressurizing the Freon gas as it arrives, turning it into a high-temperature liquid. The Freon in its new state then travels back to the house and to the blower unit.”

Keeping Your Home Bug Free

5/17/2017 (Permalink)

“Before you go after your bugs, you have to know what they're after. Some bugs, such as ants, hunt for overlooked crumbs on your floor and countertops. Moths like to munch on your sweaters. Silverfish like to go through a good book, but not the way you do. And some bugs, like fleas and mosquitoes, simply want your blood. Your job is to keep insects from getting the food they want.

Be sure to sweep your floors and wipe off your countertops to keep ants from marching in. Store cereal, dried food, and cookies in sealed containers. Grain moths love that stuff. Leaving fruit out almost guarantees a visit from gnats, so keep it in the refrigerator, if possible. Clothes made from natural fabrics attract moths, so store them in plastic bags or use moth balls. Since bugs like moisture, look for small leaks under the sink. “

Keeping Your Carpet Clean

5/4/2017 (Permalink)

“Carpeting is expensive, so you want to maintain your carpet long term. Keeping carpet clean is an ongoing project, but with time and dedication you can have clean carpeting for years to come. Regular cleaning is key. Vacuuming and professional cleaning are important for a clean carpet. Take action to prevent stains, such as removing your shoes in the home. Work on preventing damage to the carpet by avoiding certain habits, like rubbing stains and using carpet powders.

Vacuum regularly. Dirt and debris gets caught in carpet easily, and can cause damage if left in carpet long term. Regular vacuuming is one of the best means to keep carpet clean. Invest in a quality vacuum and regularly give your carpet a thorough vacuuming. “

Replacing Your Furnace Filter

3/28/2017 (Permalink)

Pretty soon it will be time to turn off your heat and start using your air conditioner.  The first thing you will need to do is replace your furnace filter. There are many styles of filters, including ones that specifically filter for allergens. First you need to know how to replace them, and how often.

“What kind of filter do you have? Start by turning off the furnace. Remove the existing furnace filter, which will be located inside the furnace or inside the return air vent. Look for an arrow on the filter indicating airflow direction. Using a permanent marker, draw the airflow direction on the outside of the furnace, so you'll always know the right way to install the filter. Then note the furnace filter size, which will be printed on the cardboard frame.”

Spring Cleaning

3/16/2017 (Permalink)

Its that time of year to begin spring cleaning fellow Clevelanders.  Where to start has always been overwhelming, so after searching online, we found this online article at: http://www.hgtv.com/design/decorating/clean-and-organize/7-spring-cleaning-tips.  Click on the link to read the entire article.  We hope it inspires you too on where to start!

  1. "The best refrigerator cleaner is a combination of salt and soda water. The bubbling action of the soda water combines with the abrasive texture of the salt to make a great cleaner.
  2. The best way to get rid of lime buildup around the faucet it is to lay paper towels over the fixture, soak it with vinegar and let it set for an hour. The deposits will soften and become easier to remove.
  3. Clean screens with a scrap of carpeting. It makes a powerful brush that removes all the dirt.
  4. Clean windows with a rag and soapy water, and then dry them with another rag. You can also go to an auto-parts store and buy a windshield squeegee, which cleans very well..."

Spring Allergy Tips

3/8/2017 (Permalink)

“Nobody said spring allergies would be fun, but you never thought it would be this bad. What if you had some simple ways to avoid the sneezing, wheezing, itchy eyes and runny nose that come in the spring?  People think they're doing everything they can to battle spring allergies," says allergist Stephen Tilles, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). "But many still find themselves under siege from pollen and other allergens that appear once the weather starts to warm up. What they don't realize is that by following a few simple rules they can make life a lot more pleasant, and their allergies more bearable."

Sweeping up the cobwebs that gathered over the winter is good for more than just making your house look better. A deep house scrub can help eliminate existing allergens and clear the air. It's especially important to get rid of mold, which builds up in bathrooms and basements and is a major allergen - especially in spring months when there's lots of moisture. Because your pets have spent a lot of time indoors over the winter, fur, saliva and dander have probably collected. Vacuuming frequently and washing upholstery and pet beds can help.”

Importance Of Home Dehumidifiers

3/6/2017 (Permalink)

“Don't let your guard down — cold season is still in full effect. The combination of Winter's dry air, a turned-up thermostat, and closed windows can wreak havoc on your respiratory system. The best way to combat dry air and reduce your susceptibility to infection is to invest in a humidifier. If you've suffered through too many colds, it might be time to see what all the hype is about.

  1. Relieve sinusitis: When the air is too dry, sinuses don't drain and function properly. According to many ENT experts, adding humidity to the air is generally good for sinus health — especially if you're regularly suffering from congestion and sinusitis.
  2. Heal faster: Whether it be a cold, asthma, or allergies, a humidifier keeps your nasal passages lubricated, which helps speed up the healing process when you're under the weather. For people with bad allergies, there are humidifiers that are specially designed to purify the air as well.”

Non Toxic House Cleaning Products For Pets

2/10/2017 (Permalink)

“Pet owners know that cleaning after their furry companions is just one of the joys (read: responsibilities) of having a cat or dog. Sharing your home means sharing everything from the couch and the blankets to the floors and the ceilings (if your pets can reach, which sometimes they can). It's tough work keeping everything clean and tidy for all members of the household, but it's even more stressful trying to choose products that are harmless for our furry friends.

Pet parents should check their cleaning products before purchasing. If any you currently own include the following chemicals, AVOID using them:

–Phenols

–Isopropyl alcohol

–Formaldehyde

–Phthalates

–Bleach

–Perchloroethylene

That said, there are many products on the market aimed at keeping your house squeaky clean and also free from noxious chemicals. Here are 10 non-toxic cleaning products that will keep your pets safe from harm, and your house looking as good as new.”

Gutter Cleaning Tips

1/22/2017 (Permalink)

“Don’t Ignore Your Gutters

While it’s a job many of us would love to ignore, gutter cleaning is an important twice-a-year ritual all homeowners need to adopt. When clogged gutters overflow, they can cause ice dams on the roof that force water inside your house. They can also get so heavy that they’ll pull the gutters loose and rot the trim and siding. Even if your gutter doesn’t fill to overflowing each season, leaving any decaying debris in there is an invitation to carpenter ants and mosquitoes. If you have a lot of trees around your house, you might want to clean your gutters even more frequently.

Cleaning Your Gutters

There are lots of ways to do the cleaning. You can find inventions like tongs on an extension pole, shop vacuums with gutter nozzles or even a remote-controlled gutter-running robot. But most methods eventually involve getting on a ladder. If you have gutters above the first story or aren’t comfortable on a ladder, you’re better off hiring a pro.

DIY Gutter Cleaning

To clean your gutters yourself, wear gloves, a dust mask, and safety goggles. Make sure your ladder is well-footed at all times and use a ladder stabilizer, or stand-off, to keep from denting and damaging your gutters. Scoop the debris into a garbage bag with a garden trowel, then rinse toward the downspout with a high-pressure nozzle on your hose and scrub it clean. Try to avoid spattering the siding in the process. Next, clear the downspouts with a hose or auger. Installing leaf strainers at the drain tops will cut down on the large clogs."

Cleaning Clothes After A Flood

8/24/2016 (Permalink)

Here are a few ideas from the CDC.  Click the link below to read the entire online article for all the tips provided.

  • “After completing the cleanup, wash your hands with soap and warm water. Use water that has been boiled for 1 minute (allow the water to cool before washing your hands).
    • Or you may use water that has been disinfected for personal hygiene use (solution of ? teaspoon [~0.75 milliliters] of household bleach per 1 gallon of water). Let it stand for 30 minutes. If the water is cloudy, use a solution of ¼ teaspoon (~1.5 milliliters) of household bleach per 1 gallon of water.
  • Wash all clothes worn during the cleanup in hot water and detergent. These clothes should be washed separately from uncontaminated clothes and linens.
  • Wash clothes contaminated with flood or sewage water in hot water and detergent. It is recommended that a laundromat be used for washing large quantities of clothes and linens until your onsite waste-water system has been professionally inspected and serviced.”

Stone, Masonry & Tile Cleaning Tips from IICRC

7/11/2016 (Permalink)

The following snippet was copied directly from http://www.iicrc.org/consumers/care/hard-surface-cleaning/.  Please continue reading for more IICRC tips and information as this is just a start!

"In today’s home decor, hard surface flooring is playing an increasingly important role. Examples of popular flooring materials include stone, concrete, ceramic/clay, wood, resilient and specialty flooring. These materials appear to be easy to clean, maintain and restore, however, soils on hard surface flooring have a tendency to build up progressively, resulting in erosion. Sooner or later, it’s necessary to clean beyond routine dusting and damp mopping; that’s the time to call in a certified professional for help."

"Identification is Key. There are six categories of hard surface floor covering: natural stone, concrete, ceramic/clay, wood, resilient and specialty. Within these categories are numerous classifications that require different cleaning methodologies. By knowing what the flooring material is, a proper floor maintenance program can be developed."

Stain Removal

7/4/2016 (Permalink)

IICRC approved instructor, Craig Jasper said “If the right steps aren’t followed, a potentially temporary spot can become a permanent stain.”  He goes on to provide steps should find a spill or mess that could leave a stain. Here is one step from his list found at http://www.iicrc.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/IICRC-Summer-Stains.pdf:

“Always pretest removal agents Spot removal varies based on the type. For instance, mud, soft drinks and ketchup will need to be blotted with a half tablespoon of dishwashing detergent mixed with one glass of water. Then, blot with a solution of one part ammonia and three parts water. For pet accidents and chocolate, follow the same process as above, and then apply white vinegar and blot. For vomit and grass, apply an enzyme detergent and keep the stain moist for 10 minutes. Blot and then apply an ammonia solution, followed by white vinegar. For blood, apply the detergent and ammonia solutions, followed by an enzyme detergent. For beer and wine, apply the detergent solution and then white vinegar. If color changes occur during removal, stop and call a professional.”

Stone, Masonry & Tile Cleaning Tips from IICRC

·         “Identification is Key. There are six categories of hard surface floor covering: natural stone, concrete, ceramic/clay, wood, resilient and specialty. Within these categories are numerous classifications that require different cleaning methodologies. By knowing what the flooring material is, a proper floor maintenance program can be developed.

·         Use Walk off Mats. The number one enemy of flooring materials is soil because of the damage caused by eroding the surface of the floor, keeping it out is paramount to a successful program. Studies indicate that five feet of walk off mat will reduce 33 percent of the soil entering into a building, and 25 feet of walk off mat will reduce almost all of the soil entering a building.

·         Spot Mopping. Slip and falls are a significan challenge with hard surface maintenance. Spills should be removed as soon as they occur. When a spill occurs, cordon off the area with wet floor signs, placards, cones or tape, remove the spill with appropriate cleaning solution, wet mop, bucket and wringer and dry the floor completely with floor fan before leaving the area.

·         Daily/Routine Maintenance. Reducing or eliminating the soil that gets past the walk off mats on a daily or routine basis is the best way to reduce the damaging effects caused by erosion to the floor surface. This is accomplished with the dry service procedures (sweeping, dust mopping or microfiber cloth systems and vacuuming) followed by wet service procedures (spot, damp, and wet mopping) using the appropriate cleaning solutions in conjunction with mop buckets and wringers ,microfiber cloth systems or automatic scrubbing machines in large open areas.

·         Periodic and Restorative Maintenance. Professional floor maintenance technicians are the best choice for the periodic and restorative maintenance of hard surface flooring. Because of the number of categories and classifications of hard surface flooring available, mistakes can be made. A certified floor maintenance technician will know how to identify and provide the proper floor maintenance solutions.”

New Carpet Odor

5/20/2016 (Permalink)

The following was copied directly from: http://www.iicrc.org/consumers/care/odor-control/

“New carpet odor comes from a reaction between styrene and butadiene, the components of synthetic latex or styrene-butadiene latex (SBL). There is no natural latex used in carpet today; therefore, there are none of the latex proteins that cause allergic reactions in sensitive people, as might be the case with latex gloves.

When new carpet is installed, the old carpet should be thoroughly vacuumed with a high-efficiency filtered vacuum cleaner before it’s disengaged. If it’s particularly filthy or highly contaminated with mold or pet urine, it is advisable to roll it in plastic as it is removed. Then the subfloor should be vacuumed before the new carpet is installed.

Much of the suffering that people experience during and immediately after new carpet installation is directly related to aerosolized dusts and biological fragments (bioaerosols) that are rendered airborne when the carpet is “ripped out.” Positive ventilation helps a good deal here as well.”

Clorox® Cleaning Tip

“Regain your drain and keep your sink in the pink with these cleaning solutions.

Steps to a cleaner sink and drain:

Before you go to bed, clear out the dishes from the sink and place them in the dishwasher. You can hit the sheets knowing the dishes will be clean in the morning.

Clean and disinfect kitchen sinks in one easy step with Clorox® Disinfecting Wipes. You can also clean and disinfect sinks daily with Clorox® Clean-Up® Cleaner + Bleach.

To deodorize drains, flush with water. Pour 3/4 cup Clorox® Regular-Bleach into the drain, then flush with hot water.

Keep your drain running clear by switching to liquid soap or glycerin bar soap. The binders in traditional bar soaps are the main cause of soap scum and contribute to clogged drains. Source: RealSimple.com*”

Rug Cleaning

5/18/2016 (Permalink)

The following was copied directly from:

http://www.iicrc.org/consumers/care/rug-cleaning/

“Sixty-four percent of U.S. homeowners have rugs in their homes; found a survey by the IICRC, but only 40 percent clean them on a regular basis. Like carpets, rugs require proper maintenance to retain their appearance and durability.

Area rugs tend to be made of more delicate fibers, questionable dyes and woven constructions that can easily be damaged by do-it-yourself procedures or even professionals without adequate training and experience.

Certified technicians are trained to recognize different fibers, constructions and types of carpet and rugs, along with their potential problems. They have the equipment, training and experience to restore the beauty of carpet and rugs — improving the look of your home or business and protecting the indoor environment, as well as your investment.”

Cleaning Hard Surfaces

4/25/2016 (Permalink)

The following was copied directly from:

http://www.iicrc.org/hard-surface-cleaning-t-15.html

"The need for hard surface cleaning is growing rapidly in conjunction with the popularity this type of flooring is seeing. While they require fairly low maintenance it is imperative to the look and longevity of these materials to have them routinely treated by highly trained technicians. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification, or IICRC, has responded to the demand for such preservation by offering relevant courses, materials, and certifications for hard surface cleaning service providers. When a customer hires a certified technician they can rest assured their flooring will be cared for appropriately.

Many consumers are looking past the traditional carpeting and vinyl flooring and recognizing the variety of options available for both commercial and residential settings. They include, but are not limited to ceramic tile, wood, stone, laminate, and concrete. In addition to the innovative styles, the prevalence of these types of floor is largely due to the ease with which they are maintained. Entry mats and area rugs are helpful additions as is regular sweeping, vacuuming and light mopping to minimize the soils that can ultimately cause erosion to the floor over time. In order to retain the material's appearance and durability it is necessary to hire a qualified professional to perform a serious treatment that will provide the proper protection. The knowledge and experience they carry will ensure the correct equipment, chemicals, materials, and methods of care are employed. In addition, they can provide customers with any applicable tips and techniques for hard surface cleaning in between professional care visits.

The IICRC is an international non-profit, ANSI-accredited organization that specializes in standards development and certification for the inspection, cleaning and refurbishment areas of the flooring industry. They have operated alongside other industry groups to formulate agreed upon standards for the field since its start in 1972. Their presence in countries such as Australia, United Kingdom, Japan, Canada and the United States has made them the core body of information and voice for the roughly 6,500 firms and over 54,000 technicians certified within their program.

Individuals that complete the curriculum and training offered by this premiere organization are certified to have in-depth understanding about the techniques, safety guidelines, and up to date science and research
. There is a range of inspection certification categories offered by the organization including those focused exclusively on the hard surface cleaning of resilient flooring, stone, masonry, and ceramic tile maintenance, wood floor, wood laminate, and floor care. Within each specialty is pertinent coursework and training intended to maximize technician expertise in the field. The IICRC oversees the materials and testing given to make certain that technicians are familiar with current trends, standards, methodological developments, and flooring related problems upon completing the program. The confidence the organization has in its program and alumni is shown in the CleanTrust™ service mark that certified technicians and companies are permitted to display on their website or published materials to show the knowledge and skills they have acquired.

There comes a time in every commercial or residential property when the basic hard surface cleaning techniques do not suffice. In these instances hiring an IICRC certified technician can assure the customer of the service provider’s integrity and that the floor care received is of high quality. As a result, their investment is maximized and they can enjoy their flooring for years to come."

Carpet Restoration

4/13/2016 (Permalink)

The following was copied directly from: http://www.iicrc.org/carpet-restoration-t-17.html

"Total carpet restoration can have transformative effects on carpeting, making the home appear bright and new. It can be a highly involved process, though, and requires several skills, some of them rather advanced. In almost all cases, it will take a trained professional to get the job done right, and even among professionals, effective cleaning and repair is something that has to be learned. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is committed to helping industry professionals acquire the skills they need, and helping homeowners get the service they require, and expect.

What processes are involved during carpet restoration?

To give the carpeting new life, technicians will have to clean it thoroughly. Over the years, it will take on a variety of soils and stains, and vacuuming isn’t enough to handle them. Certified technicians have additional, commercial grade technology that makes deeper cleaning possible. This includes equipment like hot water extraction technology, bonnet cleaners, and special cleansing agents that break down various soils for easy removal.

During the IICRC certification process, technicians are challenged to learn the most effective cleaning methods available, giving them the tools they need to handle any job, of any size. During carpet restoration, these methods will render the best results, and include processes that remove dry soils, suspend matted soils, and eliminates them as well. Technicians are also trained in proper drying and grooming techniques, so the carpet will set well after cleaning.

While cleaning is essential for maintaining the carpet’s integrity, it is only one step. After years of neglect, stains, odors, and structural damage will likely be present. Removing stains requires specialized formulated  stain removing agents, and if the stain has caused permanent discoloration to the fibers, color repair will be needed. Technicians certified in color repair know effective dyeing methods and which techniques work best with various fiber constructions.

Professionals certified in odor removal are trained in the detection and elimination of any odor type, whether organic, chemical, or the product of combustion. If needed, odor removal technicians can employ chemical solutions that safely suppress and neutralize odors.

If there are any tears or punctures present, carpet restoration won’t be complete until they are repaired professionally. A repair technician may also be needed when the flooring separates from the baseboards and bunches up. During some repairs, the professional will cut away the damaged area and replace it with a donor patch from a closet corner or other inconspicuous location that is in good condition. With professional grooming, the new bonded insert will appear identical to the carpet around it.

The IICRC leads the way in training professionals in these methods, which is why homeowners should consider certified technicians for their restoration needs."

Carpet Cleaning

4/10/2016 (Permalink)

The following was copied directly from:

http://www.iicrc.org/carpet-cleaning-t-9.html

"Carpet cleaning is important to maintaining the overall comfort and monetary value of a property. Any type of flooring is an investment for the property owner. Keeping the investment in the best shape takes a professional, but without proper certification, the consumer cannot be guaranteed of proper education and training on updated techniques used in maintaining the value of the flooring.

There are health concerns that can arise from any unsanitary environment, and it can be surprising to learn what survives in and under the flooring. Allergens that are left behind can lead to serious health problems for family members and even household pets. Proper techniques can reduce or eliminate allergens in the environment, improving the health of the occupants.

Great strides have been made in technologies used in carpet-care. Today there are only a few basic wet and dry methodologies accepted by the industry leaders. Ensuring consistently high standards means understanding how the certifying body works to guarantee better results at lower costs.

Proper maintenance begins with regular vacuuming using a high-powered machine. Over time normal wear and tear leads to a dull, soiled appearance. Proper maintenance by the occupants can help keep the flooring looking good, but there comes a time when a certified technician has to be called to get to the really deep grime a normal household vacuum can miss.

A carpet cleaning technician should always be trained and educated in proper techniques. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is the accepted industry leader in floor maintenance and restoration. The non-profit organization ensures technicians remain competitive and that consumers receive better service.

For businesses, getting certified helps build the competitive edge and grow a successful business. A higher level of commitment and competency is displayed with the CleanTrust logo. The most updated technologies and techniques are available to the professional. Hiring a company that doesn’t take the certification process seriously is not good enough. It takes dedication and experience to earn the trust of the consumer, and proper training and education will ensure that the job is done well.

ANSI accreditation has been vital to the reputation of any organization. Being the industry leader when it comes to carpet cleaning certification has not been easy. Only the most modern methods will suffice. In conjunction with the American Home Furnishings Alliance the IICRC has also been proven reliable in producing Furniture Care Codes necessary for high quality upholstery care.

The consumer can trust that a registered logo comes with certain responsibilities. Continuing education guarantees a certified technician is updated on the latest methods in high quality carpet cleaning and care. All technicians have to carry the proper amount of liability insurance, and the logo is a promise of high integrity and honesty.

While regular maintenance is beneficial to the healthfulness and attractiveness of a home or office, a certified technician is necessary to take care of the really deep jobs regular vacuuming misses.

Consumers often find it difficult to choose a professional company for those important household chores. The benefits of carpet cleaning are numerous, but knowing who can be trusted is not always easy. The IICRC provides continuing education and demands higher standards for its technicians. The CleanTrust logo is a promise of integrity and professionalism ensuring only the best in the industry handles the floor care on any property."

Spring Cleaning Tips

3/24/2016 (Permalink)

Seven Spring cleaning tips quoted directly from http://www.hgtv.com/design/decorating/clean-and-organize/7-spring-cleaning-tips :

"If spring is in the air, don't let a musty house spoil it. Here are seven tips for giving the season the welcome it deserves.

  1. The best refrigerator cleaner is a combination of salt and soda water.
You can also go to an auto-parts store and buy a windshield squeegee, which cleans very well.
  5. If drapes are looking drab, take them out of the window, remove the hooks and run them through the air-fluff cycle in the dryer along with a wet towel (to draw off the dust) for 15 minutes. Hang them back in the windows immediately.
  6. Clean the blades of a ceiling fan by covering them with a coat of furniture polish. Wipe off the excess and lightly buff.
  7. Sometimes comforters, blankets and pillows don't need to be cleaned, but they do need to be aired out after a long winter in your closed-up home. Take them outside and hang them on a clothesline for a day."
