10 Summer Storm Power Outage Safety Tips for the Mayfield Heights Area

8/7/2020 (Permalink)

This summer, with the vast amount of storms and recent power outages, follow these quick and easy steps to ensure your safety and the safety of others, according to FLASH.org.

  1. Create a family disaster plan to identify transportation alternatives to escape the Valley View area.
  2. Always keep your car gas tank at no less than half-full as gas stations rely on electricity to power their pumps.
  3. Do NOT call 9-1-1 during an outage unless there is a true emergency. The best way to stay up-to-date is by using a radio and web-enabled phone.
  4. Keep flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio on hand, along with non-perishable foods, medicine, and pet food.
  5. Avoid using candles in an outage as they are an extreme fire hazard, especially at night.
  6. Due to the hot temperatures outside in the summer, move to the lowest level of your Pepper Pike home because hot air rises and cool air falls.
  7. Food in the fridge or freezer should be safe of spoilage for 4-6 hours without electricity.
  8. If you intend to use a generator, be sure it is a gas-powered generator and is only used in well-ventilated areas.
  9. Do not plug emergency generators into electrical outlets while the power is out as they can feed electricity back into the power lines and put you and your local Brooklyn Heights line workers in danger.
  10. After power is restored, wait a few minutes before turning on major appliances to limit further problems caused by an increase in electrical demand.
