Sewage Restoration: What You Should Know
Sewage backups can be very hazardous, as this water is unsanitary and contains dangerous bacteria. There are three main types of sewage, or contaminated, water: “clean water”, “gray water”, and “black water”. Our team at SERVPRO of South Euclid / Lyndhurst / Pepper Pike are highly trained in inspecting contaminated water to determine its type and planning a safety response accordingly.
“Clean Water”: This is water from a clean source, such as a faucet. However, if left untreated, it can turn into “gray water” or “black water” depending on time, temperature, and contact with other contaminants.
“Gray Water”: This is water with a moderate level of contamination. This water would cause illness if ingested, and is typically from washing machines, toilets, or dishwashers. And just like the “clean water”, if left untreated, it can turn into “black water” depending on time, temperature, and contact with other contaminants.
“Black Water”: This is water with an extreme amount of contamination that could cause severe illness or death if ingested. This water is typically from rivers/streams, toilets with feces, or standing water with microbial growth. Any contact with water of this sort should be avoided.
