Flash Flood Safety in Valley View

8/4/2023 (Permalink)

flash flood in front of home What qualifies as a flash flood? Where are they most prevalent? How can you stay safe? SERVPRO Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast is here to explain!

Flash floods can be dangerous. They are also complex and sometimes confusing. What qualifies as a flash flood? Where are they most prevalent? How can you stay safe? SERVPRO Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast is here to explain!

What is a Flash Flood?

The National Weather Service defines flash flooding as, “flooding that begins within 6 hours, and often within 3 hours, of the heavy rainfall (or other cause).” They also explain they are mostly caused by extremely heavy rainfall as well as dam or levee breaks. In urban areas, impervious surfaces such as roads and sidewalks do not allow water to infiltrate the ground.

Where Do They Strike?

Though flash flooding is possible everywhere, it is most common in smaller streams and creeks. This heavy rainfall turns them into raging torrents. As mentioned earlier, they can strike when heavy rain cannot infiltrate the ground. This means roads with lower elevation can see standing or even running water during a flash flood. Never walk or drive through running water!

How Can You Stay Safe?

The Red Cross recommends three steps to stay safe during a flooding event:

  • Build an Emergency Kit consisting of: water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, a battery-powered radio, a first aid kit, medication, and more
  • Have an Evacuation Plan and practice the plan to minimize confusion
  • Stay informed! Learn the community’s emergency response plan, plan routes to local shelters, and stay up to date on weather conditions

Follow these tips to stay safe! If you experience flooding in your Beachwood home, call the water damage restoration specialists at SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast. We have the training, experience, and equipment to dry and restore any amount of damage. Call us today at (216) 464-4498 or visit our Website to begin getting your Valley View home to its previous condition fast!

How to Prevent Damage from Winter Storms in Euclid

Heavy snowstorms are bound to sweep through Euclid. There are certain things you could look for after a storm to see if your Euclid home incurred any damage. Here is what to expect from the first heavy snowstorm of the year.

What to Check After a Snowstorm

  • Make sure the batteries in your carbon monoxide detector are working. This is important as most homes will lose electricity during a blizzard and must burn wood or fuel inside the home to stay warm.
  • Check for broken water pipes and shut off the water supply until a professional can come and repair them.
  • Look around your home and check for any broken or shattered windows. Temporary fixes include covering them with plywood or taping blankets for insulation.
  • Listen to a radio for any roadblocks or emergency announcements.
  • If you have a chimney, make sure there is no structural damage. You don’t want to light a fire and have the smoke backing up into your home.
  • It’s important that you check for broken tree limbs as well. They could fall later and damage your yard or even cause potential injury.

How to Protect Your Beachwood Home from Winter Storms

1/25/2022 (Permalink)

Snow falling in a neighborhood of homes The weather in Beachwood, Ohio can be quite unpredictable, especially in the winter months.

The weather in Beachwood, Ohio can be quite unpredictable, especially in the winter months. While it’s best to winter-proof your home before winter arrives, there are plenty of steps you can take to reduce the chances of damage to your property, even when a winter storm is headed your way:

Warm those pipes. One of the most common (and costly) causes of damage during winter months are frozen and/or burst pipes. Pipes that are exposed to colder parts of the house or exterior walls are most susceptible to freezing and breaking. Wrap pipes in the cold parts of the home in insulation and keep kitchen and bathroom cabinets open to allow warm air to circulate around those pipes. It also helps to let water drip slowly from the faucets.

Avoid damage from ice dams. Ice dams are another common cause of winter damage to homes. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow from draining off the roof. The water can back up behind the dam and leak into a home, causing damage to walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas. If you have icicles hanging from your roof, that can be an indicator that ice dams are forming.

Keep your attic cold (no more than five to ten degrees warmer than outside temperatures) by sealing holes from light fixtures and ceiling fans to prevent warm air from escaping out of the home and into the attic. Also, (carefully!) remove snow from your roof using a roof rake and push broom.

Protect the outside of your house. Clean and clear your gutters and downspouts to ensure water doesn’t back up and freeze. Trim any low-hanging tree branches that could potentially freeze, snap, and damage the home or power lines. Seal drafty windows and doors with weather stripping

Keep two emergency kits (one in your car, and one in your home). The kit in your home should contain flashlights, extra batteries, a battery-powered radio, cash, a three-day supply of food and water for each household member (including pets), a first-aid kit, and a seven-day supply of medications.

The vehicle kit should contain a shovel, snow scraper, small broom, energy bars and water, extra hats, socks, and mittens, booster cables, emergency flares and reflectors, road salt, a first aid kit, a car charger for phones and electronics, flashlights, a battery-powered radio, extra batteries, and a sleeping bag or blanket. It is also important to keep your gas tank at least half full during winter.

Buy a carbon monoxide detector. Carbon monoxide poisoning is more prevalent in winter months due to improper ventilation of heating devices. It is recommended that you have one detector on each floor of the home.

Buy a generator. In the event of a power outage, a generator can help keep your heat and power on. This can provide peace of mind during storms, keeping your sump pump and fire alarms working, as well as preventing frozen pipes and keeping you and your family comfortable.

Winter storms are a part of life in northeast Ohio, but damage to your property doesn’t have to be. If you do experience damage to your University Heights, Euclid, or Bratenahl home or business, rest assured that SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Prepare for Lake Effect Snow Possibilities in Beachwood, Ohio

12/1/2021 (Permalink)

If you are new to the Beachwood area, you are about to meet a familiar enemy called Lake Effect Snow Showers. Most of us are used to this warning, but for those new to the area, you may be wondering what Lake Effect means to Cleveland.

Lake effect occurs when the air is significantly colder than the surface of the water. As damp air from a lake moves over land and rises in elevation, rain or snow is released. In the case of lake-effect snow squalls, there can be thunder and lightning as well as blizzard conditions. The visibility can transition from unlimited to near zero, and roads can become snow covered in a matter of seconds, hence the concern for unsuspecting motorists traveling the highways.  It is not uncommon for one area to receive a modest 2-4 inches of snow fall.  Whereas a town simply 15 miles away could accumulate between 1-2 FEET of snow!

Be sure to keep your gas tank at at least half a tank, bring water on each trip, and a spare blanket in your car in case traffic is backed up from the hazardous conditions. If possible, stay in your Beachwood home with a warm cup of coffee and admire the picturesque snow fall.

If you happen to come home to water damage, call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast at 216-464-4498 and let us make it "Like it never even happened."®

Richmond Heights Fall Storms are Inevitable!

9/15/2021 (Permalink)

If you have lived in Richmond Heights for a minimum of a year, you know that fall rainstorms are serious business. As you are preparing your home for the new season, it’s best to keep a few of these in mind:

* Install or update your sump pump!  Excessive rain can quickly fill your Valley View basement with water.  It only takes a few inches of water to cause over $10,000 in damage and sump pump actuates automatically to remove water before it accumulates. If you already own a sump pump, be sure to test it by pouring water into the basin to ensure the pump is in working order. Consider adding a battery back up feature to give you an extra piece of mind should a power outage occur.

* Inspect your roof for any leaks!

* Schedule annual maintenance on your heating system and even your fireplace!  Clear out any charred wood from the fireplace and all a professional to clean the chimney.  To beat the rush, make these annual appointments before the weather drops and professionals have a waiting list.

* Drain your water heater and clear out any debris that may collected in the tank.  You will want to drain any outdoor faucets and sprinklers.

* Update your smoke alarm’s batteries!

If your commercial or residential building of Euclid has water damage from  a roof leak, call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast at 216-464-4498 and let us make it "Like it never even happened."®

Storm Watch vs. Storm Warning: What Is The Difference and What Does it Mean to Your Cleveland Home?

1/25/2021 (Permalink)

Living in the Euclid area, we hear the words ‘storm watch’ and ‘storm warning’ many times throughout the year, but what do they really mean? A storm watch means that weather conditions are at a level where a severe storm can easily develop. A storm warning means that a current storm that already exists could turn even worse.

According to the National Weather Service, they issue two types of watches and three types of warnings during the winter time. A Winter Storm Watch is issued when “conditions [are] favorable for a winter storm event, which is a threat to life or property”, while a Blizzard Watch is issued when “conditions [are] favorable for a blizzard event” with low visibility and high winds. On the other hand, a Winter Storm Warning is issued when there is a heavy snowfall of at least 6 inches in 12 hours, 8 inches in 24 hours, or ½ inch of sleet. A Ice Storm Warning is issued when there is an ice accumulation of at least ¼ inch, while a Blizzard Warning is issued when blizzard conditions continued for at least three hours or more.

For more information on Storm Watches and Warnings, check out https://www.weather.gov/ilx/wwa_social.

Wind Storm Damage in the Beachwood Area

12/1/2020 (Permalink)

Recently in Beachwood, we have had some pretty bad wind storms, many of them causing severe damage to homes and property. Damaging winds are often called “straight-line” winds to differentiate this type of damage from tornado damage. Strong thunderstorm winds can come from a number of different processes. Most thunderstorm winds are classified as those exceeding 50-60 mph. Damage from severe thunderstorm winds is more common than damage from tornadoes and these wind speeds can reach up to 100 mph. They can produce a damage path extending for hundreds of miles.

Make sure you know the difference between Flood Warnings, Flood Watches, and Flood Advisories, according to www.weather.gov, so that you can be as prepared as possible for any potential future alerts.

A flash flood is a sudden violent flood that can take from minutes to hours to develop. It is even possible to experience a flash flood in areas not immediately receiving rain.
  • Flood Warning: Take Action!? A Flood Warning is issued when the hazardous weather event is imminent or already happening. A Flood Warning is issued when flooding is imminent or occurring.

10 Summer Storm Power Outage Safety Tips for the Mayfield Heights Area

8/7/2020 (Permalink)

This summer, with the vast amount of storms and recent power outages, follow these quick and easy steps to ensure your safety and the safety of others, according to FLASH.org.

  1. Create a family disaster plan to identify transportation alternatives to escape the Valley View area.
  2. Always keep your car gas tank at no less than half-full as gas stations rely on electricity to power their pumps.
  3. Do NOT call 9-1-1 during an outage unless there is a true emergency. The best way to stay up-to-date is by using a radio and web-enabled phone.
  4. Keep flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio on hand, along with non-perishable foods, medicine, and pet food.
  5. Avoid using candles in an outage as they are an extreme fire hazard, especially at night.
  6. Due to the hot temperatures outside in the summer, move to the lowest level of your Pepper Pike home because hot air rises and cool air falls.
  7. Food in the fridge or freezer should be safe of spoilage for 4-6 hours without electricity.
  8. If you intend to use a generator, be sure it is a gas-powered generator and is only used in well-ventilated areas.
  9. Do not plug emergency generators into electrical outlets while the power is out as they can feed electricity back into the power lines and put you and your local Brooklyn Heights line workers in danger.
  10. After power is restored, wait a few minutes before turning on major appliances to limit further problems caused by an increase in electrical demand.

For more information or for any and all fire restoration needs, call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast at 216-464-4498 and we’ll make “Like it never even happened.”

There are many factors that need to be considered, and many hidden dangers that can get worse if not handled properly. Here are the reasons why it’s best to hire a professional restoration company after a disaster has struck your South Euclid home:

Respiratory issues are very much associated with improperly treated smoke damage.

Water damage left unaddressed may cause mold damage which can occur in less than 48 hour after water infiltration.

Not to mention the potential damaging affect of mold or smoke exposure to your health.

It’s getting to be that time of year again in the Newburgh Heights area. Time for cold temperatures, rainstorms, snowstorms, sleet and ice. Mother Nature sure can be erratic when it comes to the winter weather here in Cleveland, Ohio. In fact, the 2020 Farmers’ Almanac is saying we will be in for a “Polar Coaster Winter”, also stating this upcoming winter season in our area will be “freezing, frigid and frosty”.  Not the best news for most of us. As you know, these extreme weather conditions can really take a toll on your property that is exposed to the elements each and every day- like your home. Gradual degradation can make your Euclid home vulnerable to water.

Your home can be affected by water intrusion during any kind of winter storm. Winter storms can produce very strong hail, heavy snowfall and below zero temperatures which can cause roof damage, as well as damage to the siding and pipes. Studies show that in 2018 alone, more than an estimated $2 billion in losses were reported due to severe winter weather.

SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast are always ready to assist you with storm damage. Whenever water starts to invade your property, call us for help. National Preparedness Month - Preparing for Your Cleveland Family Pet

9/13/2019 (Permalink)

National Preparedness Month- Part 2- Preparing for Your Family Pets

As we learned in our last blog regarding National Preparedness Month, September is the month dedicated by the government program FEMA to encourage Americans to be prepared for natural disasters and/or emergencies situations. But what about the safety of our beloved pets? They are family too, after all! SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast would like to share with you a version of the ASPCA’s list on how to prepare for your pets.

  1. Prepare an emergency supply kit for your pets:
  • Food and water are essential! Make sure you have at least 3 days of water designated solely for each pet. You will also need at least 3 days of food sealed in a waterproof container.
  • Keep an extra supply of any medicines required for the care of your pets.
  • Have a pet carrier or crate on hand to easily move your pet to a safe location with the rest of your family.
  • Don’t forget about sanitation! Include litter and box, newspapers, plastic bags, large trash bags and paper towels. If you have any special sanitation product you use- pack them also.
  1. Plan for an Emergency:
  • Prepare a list of emergency lodging facilities- remember, if you must go to a shelter/Safe Haven, animals may not be allowed!
  • Develop a plan with friends and neighbors. Make sure someone is available to evacuate your pets if you are not able to do so yourself. Teach them where the emergency supply kit is located.
  • Designate two meet up locations- one in your immediate neighborhood and one in a far-off location. You never know what Mother Nature will bring or where it will happen.
  • Make a list of emergency hospitals, the local Humane Society, your vet and the local ASPCA, keep a copy in your supply kit.
  • Have your pets micro-chipped; this is the best way to reunite with a lost pet.

All of us at SERVPRO hope you will never need to use your emergency kit, but it is far better to be prepared than scared! However, if you ever do experience a situation which requires the professionals of SERVPRO, know that we are here for your home or business. We can assist with disaster clean up, mold remediation, water or storm damage, as well as fire loss. We are available 24/7 for your needs and we are as close as a phone call away. Be Aware! Be Prepared! Take Action! Protect Your Lyndhurst Home!

8/2/2019 (Permalink)

Lately there has been flooding all over the United States: if you are unfamiliar with the difference between a flash flood warning, flood warning, and flood advisory; then read below!

What is the difference between a Flood Watch and a Flood Warning issued by the National Weather Service?

  • Flash Flood Warning: Take Action! A Flash Flood Warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or occurring. If you are in a flood prone area move immediately to high ground. A flash flood is a sudden violent flood that can take from minutes to hours to develop. It is even possible to experience a flash flood in areas not immediately receiving rain.
  • Flood Warning: Take Action! A Flood Warning is issued when the hazardous weather event is imminent or already happening. A Flood Warning is issued when flooding is imminent or occurring.
  • Flood Watch: Be Prepared! A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for a specific hazardous weather event to occur. A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible.
  • Flood Advisory: Be Aware! A Flood Advisory is issued when a specific weather event that is forecast to occur may become a nuisance. A Flood Advisory is issued when flooding is not expected to be bad enough to issue a warning. However, it may cause significant inconvenience, and if caution is not exercised, it could lead to situations that may threaten life and/or property.

Please call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast at 216-464-4498 if you have flooding in your home or business. We service the surrounding areas of Cleveland and Beachwood including, but not limited to: Garfield Heights, South Euclid, and Northeast Cleveland.

Hailstorms in Garfield Heights!

1/21/2019 (Permalink)

Ensure proper coverage before a major event; know who you are dealing with after a storm hits.

When it comes to natural disasters, Mother Nature can be unpredictable. Knowing you have the proper insurance coverage beforehand and knowing whom to deal with to handle repairs in the aftermath can help protect your Mayfield Heights property and your finances.

Hail can quickly damage your Euclid home and or vehicle. For automobiles, comprehensive coverage may be necessary to safeguard your vehicle; however, a basic liability policy may not provide adequate coverage. When it comes to your Lyndhurst home, hail damage can be covered by a standard homeowner's policy, but coverage can be affected by factors like where you live, and the type of policy you have purchased.

SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast recommend the following tips to avoid becoming a victim of insurance fraud should you experience damage during a hail storm, or any storm.

  1. Be wary of door-to-door solicitors
  2. Make sure contractors are licensed
  3. Read all documents before signing anything
  4. Keep copies of all documents signed
  5. Be leery of contractors trying to provide "advice" about insurance coverage

Insurance industry statistics estimate hail damage to exceed $1 billion annually in the U.S., mostly to roofs and cars. Understand the risks of where you reside and the types of catastrophe coverage available.

SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast is here for you through the storm! If a hailstorm occurs and you need your roof tarped, give us a call today at (216) 464-4498

What is Lake Effect Snow and What Does it Mean for the Cleveland Area?

1/9/2019 (Permalink)

If you live in the Northeast Ohio area or anywhere along the Great Lakes, then you are wildly familiar with the words “lake effect snow”.

According to Weatherology.com, "lake effect snow is something everyone has heard mentioned at one time or another, but this phenomenon is rarely explained in detail." Oftentimes, the furthest explanation that is given is that cold air is blowing over the lake, resulting in heavy snows. This description hardly scratches the surface of what needs to happen for lake effect snow to occur. Let's dig into the science behind lake effect snow, who gets the most, and what needs to come together for any sort of lake effect snow event to occur.

Lake effect snow will only occur when there is a large enough difference between the cold air blowing over the lake and the surface water temperatures that are present in the lake. When the temperature between these two variables is 32 degrees farenheit or lower, lake effect snow is possible. When this temperature difference occurs, the lakes essentially act like boiling pots of water as steam can often times be seen rising out of the lake. These clouds of steam are the first step in the production of lake effect snow. The greater the temperature difference is between the water and the cold air aloft, the larger the amount of moisture is that rises into the atmosphere.

https://weatherology.com/articles/191/What+is+Lake+Effect+Snow%3F.html

The Great Lakes create unique weather patterns. One of those weather patterns is lake effect snow. Lake effect snowstorms occur in only three places in the world: the Great Lakes, the east shore of Hudson Bay, and along the west coasts of the Japanese islands of Honshu and Hokkaido. While people in the snow belt regions have learned to adapt, living near the lakes and experiencing lake effect snow still affects the economy and culture in significant ways. For example, winter sports like skiing and snowmobiling are major industries in some snowy areas. This lesson explores how the Great Lakes influence lake effect snow, other factors that contribute to it and ways of reading weather conditions to forecast lake effect storms.  http://www.miseagrant.umich.edu

With heavy lake effect snow comes possible pipe freezes. With pipe freezes comes pipe bursts. And with pipe bursts come water damage. Don't fall victim to water damage due to unpreparedness, initiate a preloss relationship with your local SERVPRO in the case of an emergency. Call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast today at 216.464.4498. We extend our services throughout the Cleveland/Beachwood area including, but not limited to: South Euclid, Cuyahoga Heights, and Bratenahl.

January Weather in Cleveland, Ohio

1/9/2019 (Permalink)

January is just beginning and if you live in the Cleveland, Ohio area you have already had rain, severe thunderstorms, freezing rain and snow so far.

According to The American Red Cross, "water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes." This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break.

Pipes that freeze most frequently are:

  • Water sprinkler lines, pipes that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs and swimming pool supply lines
  • Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.
  • Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation.

Whether it is the warm temperatures that bring on the rains that flood your home or business or the cold temperatures freezing and breaking your water pipes, remember, SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast is always here to help. Call us today at 216-464-4498 experience an emergency disaster. We extend our services throughout the Cleveland/Beachwood area including, but not limited to: Cuyahoga Heights, Euclid, and Pepper Pike. Should You Shower During a Storm in Your Cleveland Home?

12/18/2018 (Permalink)

Have your parents or grandparents ever told you not to shower or bathe in your Newburgh Heights home during a lighting storm? As bizarre as it may sound, they are certainly right.

The claim that taking a shower during a lightning storm can electrocute you is no old wives' tale, experts say. The National Weather Service urges the public to avoid getting in the shower during a lightning storm in the event that a bolt may strike one of your Lyndhurst home's water pipes and electrifies your bathroom.

According to the US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), an average of 80 people every year are killed by lightning, and hundreds more are severely injured. Many times these injuries are due to misinformation.

If your Garfield Heights home is damaged by lightning, call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast at 216.464.4498. We are here for you 24/7/365 for all your cleanup and restoration needs.

Storm Watch or Storm Warning? What's the Difference in Valley View?

11/27/2018 (Permalink)

Whether it be rain or snow, it is important to know what is happening around your local area.  We often hear the meteorologist say things like, “severe weather warning” or “severe weather watch”. It is just as important to know the difference between the two!

A weather warning is issued by the SPC (Storm Prediction Center) and means that there is a potential for the development of a storm. In contrast, a weather watch means there is a severe storm in progress and can be seen on radar.

No matter what type of storm, SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast is ready to help. We have certified technicians that you can trust to help you through a difficult time. We extend our services all over the Cleveland/Beachwood area including, but not limited to: Richmond Heights, Brooklyn Heights, and Lyndhurst. Call us today at 216-464-4498.

Make Sure Your Mayfield Heights Home is Storm Ready

4/23/2018 (Permalink)

Throughout this time of year, it's important for us as homeowners to keep a close eye on springtime storms. Keep an eye on the news and be prepared for anything, we are in Cleveland, Ohio anyways.

It’s a great idea to conduct an inspection of your Lyndhurst home and grounds before inclement weather hits. A leaky roof or windows can cause major problems during heavy rainfall and intense winds. Do all your exterior doors and windows fit correctly? When is the last time you took a good look at your roof?

Loose shutters, unstable large trees, and bushes can present a real problem in high winds. It’s best to trim back trees and bushes with large, heavy branches that are not in good condition so that windows and vehicles are not in danger of storm damage in windy conditions.

Many homes in older cities have drainage ditches or creeks on the property. Take time to inspect these areas and remove debris or dirt that might obstruct the flow of water from a heavy rain. A clogged drainage ditch or creek bed can cause a lot of damage by flooding your Cuyahoga Heights property during, or even after, a storm. Do you know what to do in the event of a flood? Click this link to read more about flood information and safety tips:

In the event of a storm, do you have a system in place that will help you to get information to everyone you care about in case of a weather emergency? Most of us use our cell phones to communicate these days, but in the case of a bad storm, your cell phone service could be at risk. You might consider installing a good old-fashioned landline, just in case. If you or a family member gets stuck at work or out doing errands, others will worry, so keeping those lines of communication open can keep everyone safe and worry-free.

SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast is here to help in the event of storm damage, fire damage, or mold issues. You can give us a call today at (216) 464-4498; we’re here to help!

Lake Effect Snow Information for Beachwood, Ohio

1/20/2018 (Permalink)

If you're from places like Cleveland, Shaker Heights, and Bratenahl, you know we get all kinds of lake effect snow throughout our winters. The snowfall can be so beautiful but remember, snow isn't just snow, it's also water. Water can cause all kinds of damage if not handled properly. Let's get educated! Here is an article from the National Weather Service to help us out:

“Lake effect snow is common across the Great Lakes region during the late fall and winter. Lake Effect snow occurs when cold air, often originating from Canada, moves across the open waters of the Great Lakes. As the cold air passes over the unfrozen and relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes, warmth and moisture are transferred into the lowest portion of the atmosphere. The air rises, clouds form and grow into narrow band that produces 2 to 3 inches of snow per hour or more.

Wind direction is a key component in determining which areas will receive lake effect snow. Heavy snow may be falling in one location, while the sun may be shining just a mile or two away in either direction. The physical geography of the land and water is also important. National Weather Service meteorologists consider these factors as well as others when forecasting lake effect snow..”

If you or someone you know experiences water damage from lake effect snow, call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast at 216.464.4498 for all cleanup and restorative needs!

What is a Sump Pump...and What is it Doing in My Euclid Home's Basement?

12/30/2017 (Permalink)

What on earth is a sump pump? Well, according to Lowe's, a sump pump can be described below:

"Some homes with basements or crawl spaces are protected from ground water damage by a network of drainage tubes around the foundation. These direct water into a shallow pit, or sump, where a sump pump pushes the water out and away from the house through a discharge pipe.

Sump pumps work automatically each time water fills the sump, making them easy to forget about. Don’t. A damaged or broken pump can quickly allow water to overflow the sump and damage your basement."

In the event that you experience a sump pump backup, SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast is here to take care of you. Call us today at 216.464.4498. We extend our services throughout the Northeast Ohio region including, but not limited to: Euclid, Newburgh Heights, and Bratenahl.

Winter Storm Clean Up in Beachwood, OH

12/28/2017 (Permalink)

Cold weather, snow, and ice storms can cause severe damage to your East Cleveland home or Bratenahl business. When these types of disasters strike, immediate action is necessary to prevent additional damage to your property. SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast have the winter storm experience, expertise, and the resources to remediate damage caused by winter weather.

Frozen Pipes

Extreme cold weather can cause pipes to freeze and burst. In general, pipes are more likely to freeze when the temperature is below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The resulting water damage can be extensive to your Cuyahoga Heights home. Outdoor pipes, as well as pipes in unheated areas of the home can freeze if they are not properly insulated or if temperatures are severely cold. SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast can quickly and safely repair water damage caused by frozen pipes.

Outdoor pipes most likely to freeze include:

  • Outdoor hose bibs
  • Swimming pool supply lines
  • Water sprinkler lines

Pipes in unheated or partially heated areas are also at risk of freezing, including:

  • Basements
  • Crawl spaces
  • Garages

Ice Dams

An ice dam is formed when snow melts unevenly on a roof and refreezes into a dam at the edge of the roof, near the eaves. This dam prevents any further snowmelt from draining off of the roof. This standing water can back up under shingles, leak into a home, and cause significant water damage to ceilings, walls, and other areas. Ice dams can also tear off gutters and loosen shingles.

Roof Damage

Snow and ice can cause significant damage to your gutters and roof. The additional weight of snow and ice can even cause a roof to collapse. When there’s a cold snap, water can get into cracks and small spaces and expand when it freezes, causing larger cracks and more damage. The repetition of freezing and thawing cycles can cause small cracks to get larger.

If you or someone you know experience water damage this season, call SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast at 216.464.4498 today!

Driving through a Snow Storm in Northeast Cleveland

11/19/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast care deeply about our community and we wanted to remind everyone of some basic tips for driving in the snow. Let's hear from the experts at AAA:

  • “Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Applying the gas slowly to accelerate is the best method for regaining traction and avoiding skids. Don’t try to get moving in a hurry and take time to slow down for a stoplight. Remember: It takes longer to slow down on icy roads.
  • Drive slowly. Everything takes longer on snow-covered roads. Accelerating, stopping, turning – nothing happens as quickly as on dry pavement. Give yourself time to maneuver by driving slowly.
  • The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop.
  • Know your brakes. If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS) and need to slow down quickly, press hard on the pedal-it’s normal for the pedal to vibrate a bit when the ABS is activated.
  • Don’t stop if you can avoid it. There’s a big difference in the amount of inertia it takes to start moving from a full stop versus how much it takes to get moving while still rolling. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it.
  • Don’t power up hills. Applying extra gas on snow-covered roads just starts your wheels spinning. Try to get a little inertia going before you reach the hill and let that inertia carry you to the top. As you reach the crest of the hill, reduce your speed and proceed downhill as slowly as possible.
  • Don’t stop going up a hill. There’s nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill on an icy road. Get some inertia going on a flat roadway before you take on the hill.
  • Stay home. If you really don’t have to go out, don’t. Even if you can drive well in the snow, not everyone else can. Don’t tempt fate: If you don’t have somewhere you have to be, watch the snow from indoors."

SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast encourages the community to stay safe and be alert on the roads. Call us today at 216.464.4498 for all your cleanup and restoration needs. We extend our services throughout the Northeast Ohio region including, but not limited to: Bratenahl, Valley View, and Lyndhurst.

9/9/2017 (Permalink)

All we are hearing on the news is hurricane this, hurricane that. Hurricane Harvey from the Beachwood Standpoint

8/27/2017 (Permalink)

Although we are not in Texas, our thoughts are with those effected by the Hurricane. Here is an update from ABC News:

"Houston is being inundated with "unprecedented" devastating flooding after ferocious Hurricane Harvey set in over southeast Texas this weekend, dumping torrential rain on the city, with no end in sight.

ABC News meteorologists are forecasting historic rainfall totals up to 50 inches by Wednesday.

Heavy rain bands are expected to continue to move in over Houston overnight, which will continue the catastrophic and life-threatening flash-flood emergency in the area.

The flooding comes after the hurricane left at least three people dead after it bashed the Texas coast. Buildings and parts of communities are submerged and, in Houston, there were more than 1,000 calls for rescues and people were forced to their rooftops."

Wind Damage to Your Mayfield Heights Home

8/11/2017 (Permalink)

Fire and water damage are expected...but wind damage? It's relatively rare in our area but SERVPRO of Beachwood and Cleveland Northeast is prepared to help if you or someone you know

“What are damaging winds?

Damaging winds are often called “straight-line” winds to differentiate the damage they cause from tornado damage. Strong thunderstorm winds can come from a number of different processes. Most thunderstorm winds that cause damage at the ground are a result of outflow generated by a thunderstorm downdraft. Damaging winds are classified as those exceeding 50-60 mph.

Are damaging winds really a big deal?

Damage from severe thunderstorm winds account for half of all severe reports in the lower 48 states and is more common than damage from tornadoes. Wind speeds can reach up to 100 mph and can produce a damage path extending for hundreds of miles.”

Tips for power outages

8/5/2017 (Permalink)

The following was copied by SERVPRO of Beachwood directly from: https://www.firstenergycorp.com/help/outages/what_to_do_if_youlosepower/other_steps_duringanoutage.html

 ·         “To safeguard your equipment and appliances - and to ease the initial load when power is restored - turn off or unplug televisions, VCRs, DVD players, stereos, computers, and appliances that use electric motors such as refrigerators, freezers or air conditioners, until power is restored. Leave an incandescent light on so you know when the power comes back on.

·         Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. These appliances are well insulated, so food will keep for hours if opening the door is kept to a minimum.

·         Use a flashlight or battery-powered lantern for light. Use care when burning candles; open flames are a dangerous fire hazard.

·         During cold weather, keep warm safely. Put on extra clothes or wrap up in blankets. DON'T rely on gas stoves, charcoal grills or other open-flame heat sources. Deadly carbon monoxide gas - which is odorless and invisible - may build up in your home without you realizing it.

To report an outage:

  • First check your circuit breakers or fuses.
  • If no breaker is tripped or fuse is blown, the problem may be in the connection between our wires and your home. Report your outage using one of the following methods:
  • Call our toll-free, 24-hour Outage Reporting Line, 1-888-LIGHTSS
    (1-888-544-4877), or
  • Report your outage online, or
  • Report your outage via text message.
Text REG to 544487 (LIGHTS) to get started.

Backup generators can provide an emergency power supply, enabling you to keep important equipment running during a power outage. It’s important to make sure generators are properly installed and operated to prevent health and safety risks for you”

Lightning Safety

7/11/2017 (Permalink)

This time of year brings warm weather and THUNDERSTORMS. If you can hear thunder you are in close enough proximity to be struck by lightning. While many people know the basics of lightning safety such as getting out of pools, tubs, and avoiding water…there are ways to keep your home and electronics protected.

“Unplug appliances and other electrical items, such as computers and televisions, to prevent damage from surges caused by lightning strikes

Surge Protection can help prevent damages to your electronics. There are two types of surge protection:

Point-of-Use Surge Protection

Protects only the items that are directly plugged into the device from most electrical surges

“Whole Home” Surge Protection

Located at your main electrical panel or base of the electric meter, this device provides protection for your entire electrical system”

Stay Safe During A Tornado

7/4/2017 (Permalink)

“A tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending from the base of a thunderstorm down to the ground. Tornadoes are capable of completely destroying well-made structures, uprooting trees, and hurling objects through the air like deadly missiles. Tornadoes can occur at any time of day or night and at any time of the year. Although tornadoes are most common in the Central Plains and the southeastern United States, they have been reported in all 50 states."

Tips For Getting Through A Power Outage

5/22/2017 (Permalink)

“When severe weather knocks out power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses, utility crews work around the clock to restore service. But somebody is always going to be the last one to get plugged back in...and it could be you.

If you’re already waiting around for the power to come back on, it’s too late to do prep like charging batteries or buying a generator. But there are some things you can do right now to protect your home and family…and maybe even reclaim some creature comforts.

Is this an emergency? -  Assess whether the outage is creating a threat or just an inconvenience. Are there wires down on your property? Are you unable to get in or out of your home? Is there someone inside with a medical condition?” For more information, please continue reading at: http://nhpr.org/post/10-tips-surviving-extended-power-outage#stream/0

Lake Effect Snow Information

2/6/2017 (Permalink)

The following was copied directly from the following online article to get you started reading about winter weather safety.  Click this link to read more: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/winter/lake_effect_snow.shtml

National Weather Service meteorologists consider these factors as well as others when forecasting lake effect snow.”

How Is Types Of Precipitation Detected?

1/23/2017 (Permalink)

We wanted to know how precipitation was detected.  So we went to this website http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/research/winter/ to find out.  This is just a part of the online article to get you started reading.  Please click the link to read more information.

"Detecting and forecasting different types of winter precipitation (freezing rain, sleet, snow, and rain) is difficult. We are developing an algorithm—the Winter Hydrometeor Classification Algorithm (HCA)— that uses radar data to sort winter precipitation into categories. The winter HCA combines polarimetric radar data with thermodynamic output from numerical models to produce a surface-based winter precipitation type. This will help the forecaster quickly assess the precipitation event and better forecast how much will fall."

Winter Precipitation

1/12/2017 (Permalink)

Most precipitation that forms in wintertime clouds starts out as snow because the top layer of the storm is usually cold enough to create snowflakes. Snowflakes are just collections of ice crystals that cling to each other as they fall toward the ground. Precipitation continues to fall as snow when the temperature remains at or below 0 degrees Celsius from the cloud base to the ground.”

How do winter storms form?

12/6/2016 (Permalink)

“Just like any other storm at other times of the year, the right combination of ingredients is necessary for a winter storm to develop.

Three basic ingredients are necessary to make a winter storm:

  • Cold air. Below freezing temperatures in the clouds and near the ground are necessary to make snow and/or ice.
  • Lift. Something to raise the moist air to form the clouds and cause precipitation. An example of lift is warm air colliding with cold air and being forced to rise over the cold dome. The boundary between the warm and cold air masses is called a front. Another example of lift is air flowing up a mountainside.
  • Moisture. To form clouds and precipitation. Air blowing across a body of water, such as a large lake or the ocean, is an excellent source of moisture."

School Snow Days

11/21/2016 (Permalink)

According to https://weather.com/safety/winter/news/snow-day-factors-map#/1 , “Though amount of snowfall is a factor, when that snow falls is hugely influential. If snow is still falling the morning of school, there's a better chance it will be called off. But if the snowfall ends by 8 p.m., you're probably going to have school the next day. This is because snow that stops falling sooner is more likely to be plowed – or melt away, if it's not too cold.”

Will Insurance Cover A Fallen Tree?

11/15/2016 (Permalink)

According to The Insurance Information InstituteIf a tree falls and hits your house, are you covered? The short answer is, yes. The coverage is quite straightforward: if a tree hits a home or other insured structure, such as a detached garage, standard homeowners insurance policies provide coverage for the damage the tree does to the structure and the contents in it. This includes trees felled by wind, lightning or hail.

It does not matter whether or not you own the tree; if it lands on your home, you can file a claim with your insurance company. After a hurricane or windstorm, trees, shrubs and branches can become projectiles capable of traveling significant distances and can cause considerable damage to property. In most cases, an insurance company is not going to spend time trying to figure out where a tree or other item originally came from.”  Please click this link to continue reading the online article: http://www.iii.org/article/trees-and-insurance

Lightning Facts

10/13/2016 (Permalink)

“Lightning is a giant spark of electricity in the atmosphere between clouds, the air, or the ground. In the early stages of development, air acts as an insulator between the positive and negative charges in the cloud and between the cloud and the ground. When the opposite charges builds up enough, this insulating capacity of the air breaks down and there is a rapid discharge of electricity that we know as lightning. The flash of lightning temporarily equalizes the charged regions in the atmosphere until the opposite charges build up again.
Lightning can occur between opposite charges within the thunderstorm cloud (intra-cloud lightning) or between opposite charges in the cloud and on the ground (cloud-to-ground lightning).
Lightning is one of the oldest observed natural phenomena on earth. It can be seen in volcanic eruptions, extremely intense forest fires, surface nuclear detonations, heavy snowstorms, in large hurricanes, and obviously, thunderstorms.”

Home Floods-Reentering After

9/20/2016 (Permalink)

When returning to a home that’s been flooded after natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods, be aware that your house may be contaminated with mold or sewage, which can cause health risks for your family.

When You First Reenter Your Home

  • If you have standing water in your home and can turn off the main power from a dry location, then go ahead and turn off the power, even if it delays cleaning. If you must enter standing water to access the main power switch, then call an electrician to turn it off. NEVER turn power on or off yourself or use an electric tool or appliance while standing in water.
  • Have an electrician check the house’s electrical system before turning the power on again.
  • If the house has been closed up for several days, enter briefly to open doors and windows to let the house air out for awhile (at least 30 minutes) before you stay for any length of time.
  • If your home has been flooded and has been closed up for several days, presume your home has been contaminated with mold.”

Be Prepared-Communication Plan

9/19/2016 (Permalink)

“You and your loved ones may not be together when a disaster hits. Make a plan for how you will connect to each other. Start by taking the following steps:

  • Complete a contact cardfor each family member. Everyone should keep these cards with them at all times.
  • Choose an emergency contact.Memorize the phone number if you can. A friend or relative who lives out of town might be easier to reach in an emergency. During an emergency, family members can text or call this person to let them know that they are safe.
  • Make sure all your family members know how to text.Make sure everyone knows how to turn on a cell phone, find the text messaging app, type a message, and send it to a contact.
  • Know emergency telephone numbers.Keep them in your cell phone and post them near your home phones. Some good numbers to have are your emergency contact, the fire department, police station, and hospital near you.”

Shelf Clouds

9/9/2016 (Permalink)

“The National Weather Service has a great description. Shelf clouds are typically seen at the leading edge of a thunderstorm or squall line of thunderstorms. Remember, shelf clouds are not tornadoes or wall clouds. These are formed when rain-chilled air descends in a thunderstorm's downdraft, then spreads laterally when reaching Earth's surface. Warmer, more moist air is lifted at the leading edge, or gust front, of this rain-cooled air. When this warm, moist air condenses, you see the shelf cloud.

Normally, you will feel a burst of cooler wind followed by rain and maybe hail. The higher gusts occur on the back edge which can cause downed trees and power outages. So when the next storm develops, look for the Arcus Cloud. Remember that tornadoes normally don't accompany these cloud formations just gusty winds, rain/hail then the highest winds toward the back end.”  (Source: http://sabolscience.blogspot.com/ .  Please click on the link to read the entire online article written by Scott Sabol).

What Is A Flood?

9/2/2016 (Permalink)

According to http://nssl.noaa.gov/education/svrwx101/floods/ , “Flooding is an overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry. Floods can happen during heavy rains, when ocean waves come on shore, when snow melts too fast, or when dams or levees break. Flooding may happen with only a few inches of water, or it may cover a house to the rooftop. They can occur quickly or over a long period and may last days, weeks, or longer. Floods are the most common and widespread of all weather-related natural disasters.”

Flood Detection

8/29/2016 (Permalink)

According to http://nssl.noaa.gov/education/svrwx101/floods/detection/,Flash floods tend to be associated with many types of storms, all capable of producing excessive rainfall amounts over a particular area, so detection remains a challenge. Sometimes a flash flood threat is overshadowed by other severe weather events happening at the same time. The main tools used to detect heavy rainfall associated with flash floods are satellite, lightning observing systems, radar, and rain gauges.”

When Lighting Strikes

8/17/2016 (Permalink)

Did you know you could be struck by lightning while in your home?  According to the following website article it is a possibility.  We have copied some of the article to get you started reading but you need to click the link to read the entire article: http://www.cdc.gov/disasters/lightning/safetytips.html

Even though your home is a safe shelter during a lightning storm, you may still be at risk. About one-third of lightning-strike injuries occur indoors. Here are some tips to keep safe and reduce your risk of being struck by lightning while indoors.

·         Avoid water
Do NOT bathe, shower, wash dishes, or have any other contact with water during a thunderstorm because lightning can travel through a building’s plumbing.

·         Avoid electronic equipment
Do NOT use your computers, laptops, game systems, washers, dryers, stoves, or anything connected to an electrical outlet. Lightning can travel through electrical systems, radio and television reception systems, and any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring. Equip homes with whole-house surge protectors to protect appliances.”

When To Return To Your Home After A Storm

8/15/2016 (Permalink)

Remember safety first!  “Electrical power and natural gas or propane tanks should be shut off to avoid fire, electrocution, or explosions. Try to return to your home during the daytime so that you do not have to use any lights. Use battery-powered flashlights and lanterns, rather than candles, gas lanterns, or torches. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, turn off the main gas valve, open all windows, and leave the house immediately. Notify the gas company or the police or fire departments or State Fire Marshal's office, and do not turn on the lights or do anything that could cause a spark. Do not return to the house until you are told it is safe to do so.

Your electrical system may also be damaged. If you see frayed wiring or sparks, or if there is an odor of something burning but no visible fire, you should immediately shut off the electrical system at the circuit breaker.

Avoid any downed power lines, particularly those in water. Avoid wading in standing water, which also may contain glass or metal fragments.”  (Source: http://www.cdc.gov/disasters/floods/after.html  Please click the link to continue reading as this is a small portion of the online article).

June is National Safety Month-Ohio Weather Safety

6/19/2016 (Permalink)

Did you know that Ohio has a website filled with weather safety information and tips?   The following was copied directly from: http://www.weathersafety.ohio.gov/tornadofacts.aspx to share just a snippet of the information you can find.

Whether practicing in a tornado drill or sheltering during a warning, the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness encourages Ohioans to DUCK!

D - Go DOWN to the lowest level
    U - Get UNDER something
    C - COVER your head
K - KEEP in shelter until the storm has passed

  • Take responsibility for your safety and be prepared before a watch or warning is issued. Meet with household members to develop a disaster plan to respond to tornado watches and warnings. Conduct regular tornado drills. When a tornado watch is issued, review your plan – don't wait for the watch to become a warning. Learn how to turn off the water, gas and electricity at the main switches.
  • Despite Doppler radar, tornadoes can sometimes occur without any warning, allowing very little time to act. It is important to know the basics of tornado safety. Know the difference between tornado watches and tornado warnings.
  • Tune in to one of the following for weather information: NOAA Weather Radio, local/cable television (Ohio News Network or the Weather Channel), or local radio station.
  • If you are a person with special needs, register your name and address with your local emergency management agency, police and fire departments before any natural or man-made disaster.
  • NOAA Weather Radio has available an alerting tool for people who are deaf or have hearing impairments. Some weather radio receivers can be connected to an existing home security system, much the same as a doorbell, smoke detector or other sensor.”

    Tornado Facts

    5/6/2016 (Permalink)

The following was copied directly from: http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/weather/tornado.html

"Learn what tornadoes are, how fast they spin, how far they can travel, where most tornadoes occur, the difference between an F0 tornado and an F5 tornado, what a waterspout is and much more.Read on to check out our wide range of interesting information about twisters.

    ·         A tornado is a rapidly spinning tube of air that touches both the ground and a cloud above.

    ·         Tornadoes are sometimes called twisters.

    ·         Not all tornadoes are visible but their high wind speeds and rapid rotation often form a visible funnel of condensed water.

    ·         The Fujita Scale is a common way of measuring the strength of tornadoes. The scale ranges from F0 tornadoes that cause minimal damage through to F5 tornadoes which cause massive damage.

    ·         Most tornadoes have wind speeds less than 100 miles per hour (161 kilometres per hour).

    ·         Extreme tornadoes can reach wind speeds of over 300 miles per hour (483 kilometres per hour).

    ·         Most tornadoes travel a few miles before exhausting themselves.

    ·         Extreme tornadoes can travel much further, sometimes over 100 miles (161kilometres).

    ·         The Tri-State Tornado that travelled through parts of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana in 1925 left a path of destruction over 219 miles (352 kilometres) long.

    ·         The Tri-State Tornado was the deadliest tornado in US history, killing 695 people.

    ·         The USA averages around 1200 tornadoes every year, more than any other country.

    ·         The majority of these tornadoes occur in a geographically unique area nicknamed ‘Tornado Alley’.

    ·         US States most often hit by tornadoes include Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Florida.

    ·         In 1989 the deadliest tornado ever recorded in the world killed around 1300 people in Bangladesh.

    ·         In the southern hemisphere tornadoes usually rotate in a clockwise direction.

    ·         In the northern hemisphere tornadoes usually rotate in a counterclockwise direction.

    ·         A tornado that occurs over water is often called a waterspout.

    ·         Weather radars are used to detect tornadoes and give advanced warning.

    ·         Basements and other underground areas are the safest places to seek refuge during a tornado. It is also a good idea to stay away from windows.”

    Red Cross Tips

    4/12/2016 (Permalink)

The Red Cross offers tips and advice for pre and post disasters. The following was copied directly from http://www.redcross.org/find-help/disaster-recovery/utilities-major-systems .

    "Electrical, Plumbing and Heating Systems
    • If you see sparks, broken or frayed wires, or if you smell hot insulation, turn off the electricity at the main fuse box or circuit breaker.
    • If there is a pool of water on the floor between you and the fuse box or circuit breaker panel, use a dry wooden stick to try to reach to turn off the main fuse or breaker, but do not step or stand in water to do that. If you cannot reach the fuse box or breaker panel, call a qualified electrician for assistance.
    • Inspect the panel box for any breakers that may have tripped. A tripped breaker may indicate damaged wiring inside your home. Do not turn them on. Call an electrician.
    • Use a flashlight to inspect fuses. Replace broken fuses with exactly the same amperage rating and never use an object such as a coin or strip of metal to bypass the protection that fuses provide.
    • If you suspect sewage lines are damaged, avoid using sinks, showers or toilets and call a plumber.
    • If water pipes are damaged, turn off the water at the main valve. Call a plumber for assistance.
    • If you have a heating oil tank system, turn off all valves and contact a professional specializing in maintenance of such equipment before using it again.
    Telephones
    • Check each telephone to see if it is still on the hook. Hang up any phones that aren’t. Wait a few minutes, and then pick up one phone to listen for a dial tone to know whether you have working telephone service.
    • If you don’t have a dial tone, try unplugging all the phones. Plug in one at a time and listen for dial tone. This will help you determine if the phone itself is broken or the service is completely out. If it is, contact the telephone company to report the problem and request repair."

    Power Outages in Cleveland Ohio

    3/31/2016 (Permalink)

The following was copied directly from http://www.weathersafety.ohio.gov/SpringSummerPowerOutages.aspx

    Power Outages

"Power outages can occur because of multiple reasons: utility blackouts or severe weather such as thunder and lightning storms, snow and ice storms, or strong winds. Whatever the reason, power outages can affect thousands – even millions – of people over an extended period of time.

In preparation for a power outage or any emergency, every household should have a disaster supply kit that contains key items such as non-perishable food, drinking water, a battery-operated radio or television, a land-line telephone or cell phone, and an emergency contact list of relatives or friends. To view checklists for home emergency preparedness kits, click here.

Extended power outages during extremely hot or extremely cold weather are serious concerns for individuals with special needs or for those who rely on life support devices requiring electricity, such as respirators or ventilators.

By law, utility companies are required to maintain and update their lists, annually, of customers who rely on life support devices. People with these medical concerns need to register with their utility company or complete an application to get on their lists. Written verification from the customer’s physician may also need to be included. People with medical concerns should contact their utility companies for details.

However, there is no guarantee that customers with medical needs will have their power restored immediately. People who rely on medical equipment need to be extra prepared. Their emergency preparedness kit should include a list of places to go until power is restored, additional oxygen tanks, and if possible, a backup generator as an alternate power source.

Click http://www.weathersafety.ohio.gov/PortableGeneratorInfo.aspx for information on the safe use of generators.

    Before a Power Outage

To prepare for a blackout or power outage, you should do the following.
    • To begin preparing, you should update or build an emergency kit (see above) and make a family communications plan http://www.ready.gov/family-communications.
    • Follow energy conservation measures to keep the use of electricity as low as possible, which can help power companies avoid imposing rolling blackouts.
    • Fill plastic containers with water and place them in the refrigerator and freezer, if there’s room. Leave about an inch of space inside each one, because water expands as it freezes. This chilled or frozen water will help keep food cold during a temporary power outage.
    • Be aware that most medication that requires refrigeration can be kept in a closed refrigerator for several hours without a problem. If unsure, check with your physician or pharmacist.
    • Keep your gas tank in your vehicle at least half full because gas stations rely on electricity to power their pumps.
    • Know where the manual release lever of your electric garage opener is located and know how to operate it. Garage doors can be heavy, so know that you may need help to lift it.
    • Keep a key to your house with you if you regularly use the garage as the primary means of entering your home, in case the garage door will not open.

    During a Power Outage

    • Use only flashlights for emergency lighting. NEVER use candles during a blackout or power outage. Candles pose an extreme risk of fire.
    • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to keep your food as fresh as possible. Carefully check your food for signs of spoilage before eating.
    • Turn off or disconnect appliances, equipment (like air conditioners) or electronics that were in use when the power went out. Power many return with momentary “surges” or “spikes” that can damage computers, as well as motors in appliances, like the air conditioner, refrigerator, washer or furnace.
    • NEVER run a generator inside a home or garage.
    • Do not connect a generator to a home’s electrical system. If you use a generator, connect the equipment you want to the outlets on the generator.
    • Listen to a local radio station or to a battery or generator powered television for updated information.
    • Use a standard telephone handset (land line) or cellular phone. Cordless phones and answering machines require electricity. Use the phone for emergencies only.
    • DURING THE SUMMER – Take steps to remain cool, if it’s hot outside. During prolonged power outages, consider going to a place that has power and air conditioning, such as a movie theater, shopping mall, library or “cooling shelter” that may be open in your community.
    • DURING THE WINTER – Put on layers of warm clothing if it’s cold outside. Never burn charcoal indoors for heating or cooking. Never use your gas oven as a source of heat. If the power is out for a prolonged period, plan to go to another location (a relative or friend’s home, or a public facility) that has heat to keep warm.
    • Provide plenty of fresh cool water for your pets.
    • Eliminate unnecessary travel, especially by car. Traffic signals will stop working during an outage, creating traffic congestion.
    • Try to keep cash on hand. Equipment such as automated teller machines (ATMs) will not work during a power outage or blackout.

People with Disabilities and Other Access & Functional Needs

    • Call your power company before rolling blackouts occur, if you use a battery-operated wheelchair, life-support system (such as oxygen) or other power-dependent equipment. Many utility companies keep a list and map of the locations of power-dependent customers, in case of an emergency.
    • Ask utility companies what alternatives are available in your area. Contact the customer service department of your local utility company(ies) to learn if this service is available in your community.
    • Have an extra battery, if you use a motorized wheelchair or scooter. A car battery also can be used with a wheelchair, but will not last as long as the wheelchair’s deep-cycle battery. If available, have a lightweight manual wheelchair for backup.
    • If you are visually impaired, have a talking or Braille clock, or large-print timepiece with extra batteries.
    • Consider getting a small, portable battery-operated television if you are deaf or have a hearing loss. Emergency broadcasts may give information in open captioning or American Sign Language (ASL)."

    Severe Weather Information

    3/18/2016 (Permalink)

"Forecasters and storm spotters have learned to recognize certain thunderstorm features and structure that make tornado formation more likely. Some of these are visual cues, like the rear-flank downdraft, and others are particular patterns in radar images, like the tornadic vortex signature (TVS).

Storm spotters have been trained to recognize tornado conditions and report what they see to the National Weather Service. Storm spotters can be emergency managers or even local people with a keen interest in severe weather who have taken formal storm spotter training in their community.

Computer programs, called algorithms, analyze Doppler radar data and display it in ways that make it easier for forecasters to identify dangerous weather. A storm with a tornado observed by radar has certain distinguishing features and forecasters are trained to recognize them.

When a Doppler radar detects a large rotating updraft that occurs inside a supercell, it is called a mesocyclone. The mesocyclone is usually 2-6 miles in diameter, and is much larger than the tornado that may develop within it.”  (Source: https://www.nssl.noaa.gov/education/svrwx101/tornadoes/detection/)

Tornado Watch vs. Tornado Warning-Do you know the Difference?

    3/16/2016 (Permalink)

“What is the difference between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning issued by the National Weather Service?

  • Tornado Watch: Be Prepared! Tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area. Review and discuss your emergency plans and check supplies and your safe room. Be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued or you suspect a tornado is approaching. Acting early helps to save lives! Watches are issued by the Storm Prediction Center for counties where tornadoes may occur. The watch area is typically large, covering numerous counties or even states.
  • Tornado Warning: Take Action! A tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. There is imminent danger to life and property. Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If in a mobile home, a vehicle, or outdoors, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris. Warnings are issued by your local forecast office. Warnings typically encompass a much smaller area (around the size of a city or small county) that may be impacted by a tornado identified by a forecaster on Radar or by a trained spotter/law enforcement who is watching the storm.
  • Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Be Prepared! Severe thunderstorms are possible in and near the watch area. Stay informed and be ready to act if a severe thunderstorm warning is issued. Watches are issued by the Storm Prediction Center for counties where severe thunderstorms may occur. The watch area is typically large, covering numerous counties or even states.
  • Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Take Action! Severe weather has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar. Warnings indicate imminent danger to life and property. Take shelter in a substantial building. Get out of mobile homes that can blow over in high winds. Warnings are issued by your local forecast office. Warnings typically encompass a much smaller area (around the size of a city or county) that may be impacted by an on-going severe thunderstorm.”  (Source: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/severeweather/ww.shtml)
